Hand Slaughter and Semi-Mechanical Slaughter of Poultry

FIANZ HALAL Approach and Shariah Compliance

FIANZ HALAL has certified Halal poultry slaughter in New Zealand for over two decades, ensuring strict adherence to Shariah principles while recognising operational realities of modern poultry processing. Two approved slaughter methods are used under FIANZ HALAL supervision: Hand Slaughter and Semi-Mechanical Slaughter. While the delivery method differs, both processes are fundamentally aligned in intention, control, and Shariah requirements.

Hand slaughter represents the classical Halal method. A trained Muslim slaughterman performs the slaughter manually, reciting Tasmiya (Bismillah Allahu Akbar) and severing the required vessels in a single, swift action. Each bird is individually handled, ensuring direct human intention, control, and verification of compliance at the point of slaughter.

FIANZ HALAL-approved semi-mechanical slaughter is not an alternative concept, but a direct imitation of hand slaughter adapted to high-throughput environments. The process replicates hand slaughter as closely as possible by maintaining:

  • A Muslim slaughterman in full control of the process
  • Manual initiation of slaughter with continuous supervision
  • Tasmiya recited at the point of slaughter
  • Correct Shariah cut achieved consistently on every bird

The mechanical blade does not replace the slaughterman’s authority; it functions as an extension of his hand, ensuring uniformity while preserving intent and compliance.

Key Similarities Between Both Methods

Both hand and semi-mechanical slaughter under FIANZ HALAL certification share the same core principles:

  • Conscious Muslim intention (Niyyah)
  • Recitation of Tasmiya
  • Proper severance of required vessels
  • Verification of life at the point of slaughter
  • Continuous Halal supervision and auditing

The difference lies only in delivery mechanism, not in Shariah substance.

FIANZ HALAL Oversight and Assurance

FIANZ HALAL applies strict controls, audits, and ongoing monitoring to both methods. Semi-mechanical systems are approved only where they demonstrably mirror hand slaughter outcomes, ensuring no compromise on Halal integrity, credibility, or international acceptance.
